Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) conducted a yoga program for Kudakudhinge Hiya from 27 August to 3 September 2013. Separate hour long classes were held daily at the shelter, for both children and staff. More than 30 staff members and children over the age of 10 participated in this programme conducted by Ms. Estela Sangkop, a certified yoga instructor from New Zealand.
ARC believes that this programme is important for the children as it helped them learn techniques for self-health and relaxation, and also encouraged calmness and concentration. Among other benefits of yoga include enhancing flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness, through a physical activity that is noncompetitive. This is one of many programmes organized by ARC to promote its HEAL Campaign message of Unplug & Play, encouraging active lifestyles.
The program was also appreciated by the staff as it helped them learn to better cope with stress as well as get fit and stay healthy.
