A course on Food Safety and Nutrition organized by Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) and conducted by the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies, Maldives National University, was held for the kitchen staff of Kudakudhinge Hiya and Amaan Hiya during August.
Certificates were awarded to the participants today, by the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studeis, Ms. Mariyam Shifa, at a ceremony held at the Faculty. The short, intensive course covered major areas on food safety such as food handlers’ hygiene, food-borne diseases and food spoilage, cleaning and sanitation, and pest control. The course also covered areas of nutrition including: water, fibre content, macro and micronutrients, food guidelines and labels, and food laws and regulations.
The knowledge and skills gained through this training will ensure that the staff who look after the health and nutrition of the children in Kudakudhinge Hiya and Amaan Hiya are well trained and familiar with safety measures and safe procedures. ARC believes that training the staff in shelters and equipping them with necessary skills is essential for the healthy development, safety and wellbeing of the children in shelters.
ARC takes this opportunity to express sincere appreciation to the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies for conducting the course and looks forward to cooperation with the Faculty in the future.
This training is one of several capacity-building training programmes organized by ARC each year, for the staff at children’s shelters. In this regard, ARC has organized similar courses on Food Hygiene and Basic Nutrition for the staff of Kudakudhinge Hiya in previous years as well.
