ARC has submitted its Alternative Report on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to the Committee on the Rights of the Child based in Geneva, this month. The Alternative Report outlines in detail the progress achieved and the challenges faced in implementing the principles and provisions of the Convention, which the Maldives acceded to in 1991.
The Alternative Report is based on the Fourth and Fifth Periodic Reports submitted to the Committee by the Government of Maldives in 2012. The Committee is due to consider the Government’s reports and other additional information next year, and will make recommendations in the form of concluding observations. This will be presented to the Government of Maldives to implement as a means of improving child rights, the child protection system and other measures in the country, and ensure its compliance with the Convention.
ARC’s Alternative Report was submitted to the Committee on the basis of Article 45 of the Convention which outlines the need for the Committee to gather information from a full spectrum of sources which include specialized agencies and NGOs. The Alternative Report is due to be published six months before the review of the Maldives, which takes place in January 2016 at the United Nations in Geneva.
