ARC launches road safety awareness campaign for children

MALE, September 8 (HNS): Local NGO, Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC), Monday launched an awareness campaign on road safety for children.

According to the organisation, the four-month media programme being conducted with the assistance of Thilafushi Corporation includes educating the parents and drivers on the children’s safety on the roads.

The organisation said the campaign was launched because the children need special protection due to the poor traffic situation.

“Considering the traffic situation, the number of vehicles has increased dramatically. We are noticing that the children’s safety is being neglected”, Co-founder, also the Executive Director Zeneesha Shaheed said.

“We have started airing four video clips on MNBC One and DhiTV as an urgent reminder for parents and drivers to pay attention to children’s safety on the roads. Traffic police officers will visit interested schools and give information in the assembly. We have now invited all the schools in Male.

The organisation stressed that the campaign, which will run until the year-end, will encourage children to be cautious road users. The organisation hopes that the campaign would make roads safe for children.

Registered in December 2009, ARC is also conducting an awareness programme on healthy food for children.
